Goodbye Millthorpe Studio

by Freya Laughton on May 4, 2012

For the past couple of years I have had a lovely studio in my friend’s Victorian townhouse in Penzance. During this time the house has been transformed from a work in progress into a very comfortable, almost finished, beautiful home.     Standing in the way of a completed job was a collection of vintage sewing machines, various work benches, a wall of fabric, and me! So with Millthorpe now on the market I spent the last week running up and down stairs and wishing I’d chosen to collect stamps instead.

Unfortunately I have yet to find a new place to fill with fluff and the soothing sounds of radio 4. My materials are now contained in bin-liners and boxes, piled on all available floor space at home until I can find a new studio (any offers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated).

Canada, Salt Spring Island and Whales

by Freya Laughton on April 10, 2012

One of the biggest attractions to the Gulf Islands for me is the water, occupied by Resident Orca, fish-eaters, and mammal-eating  Transients. I have loved Orca from the moment I saw pictures and films of them over twenty years ago, I like other whales, and sharks and most animals, but Orca are something else, so I couldn’t come to this part of the world without looking for them, I didn’t have to look far. Most of the islands have whale watching tours that go out during the season, I have been on one before over six years ago from Victoria, the boats keep to a schedule, and have a queue of people waiting to go out, we saw whales briefly, but I wanted more, and found it on Salt Spring Island with The Gulf Island’s Whale and Wildlife Tours. Once Ian Gidney had our contact details he could let us know as soon as there was news of Orca in the area. Transients were spotted on Saturday, so after the fantastic market we set out from Ganges harbour to find them. And there they were, barely twenty minutes away off Ruckle Park.

A family of about six or seven, including a baby, hunting seals.

Transient Orca, Salt Spring Island BC 2We watched from a respectable distance as they pursued  the seals, taking us back past the sailing club and little boats out for the day, right into the harbour!

Transient Orca - Salt Spring Island BC 4The hunt looked calm and effortless above the water, although I’m sure it was a different story below.

Transient Orca - Salt Spring Island BC 5The family left the harbour in a full sleepy state, and swam out to sea, to continue their journey.

Transient Orca, Salt Spring Island BC 3Ian then set out to continue the tour, as if three hours watching Orca wasn’t enough! We spend over another hour around the Islands looking at sea lions, the lucky seals that got away.

Canada day three

March 31, 2012

Now well acquainted with this time-zone, and congratulating the sun on another dazzling appearance we made our way to Horseshoe Bay to catch the Langdale ferry, in search of a distant cousin. BC ferries are the buses that pop between all the Gulf Islands, they carry people and cars, the bigger ferries have a little shop, restaurant, kids play room and […]

Canada day two

March 28, 2012

Day two brought the promise of hot chocolate, at the end of a short snow shoe hike up Cypress Mountain. After our hike I took the opportunity to do a little window shopping in the city, look who I found in Orling and Wu, 28 Water Street, Poppy Treffry’s beautiful cosies looking very much at home! Where are the whales […]

Canada day one

March 27, 2012

I pictured spending our first day sipping hot chocolate and people watching, but the sun was shining and my parents were eager to explore so I had no excuse to sit around. So, after 21 hours travel from Penzance to Vancouver and 10 hours of jet-lag sleep we were ready to venture out into the […]

Packing for Canada

March 21, 2012

I returned from house and cat sitting for a friend near Lands End yesterday, just in time to unpack, tidy away and repack for three weeks in Canada. The journey starts at silly-o-clock tomorrow (6:45am) in Penzance, and finishes very many hours later in Vancouver. After a few days to shake off jet-lag and see […]

The pretty song in my head.

February 21, 2012

My Pa, a friend and I went to the Acorn on Sunday night to see Megan Henwood, the BBC radio 2 young folk award winner. She has a lovely voice and we were very lucky to be listening in such a cosy setting. Her support act Kezia was also a pleasure to hear. I hope the Acorn […]

London, spider silk, family and friends.

February 16, 2012

My parents and I received an invitation to a friend’s 70th birthday party in London, so I decided to take a few extra days off to meet up with some long lost friends and spend time with family. I woke up a little earlier than usual to catch the 6:45 train from Penzance, and I spent […]

Penzance Farmers Market

October 27, 2011

Friday is my favorite day, and not just because it’s ‘Freya’s day’! We have a very good farmers market in, or outside the town hall, St. John’s Hall. There are lots of stalls with all sorts of tasty fresh food, including Hope’s delicious bread, it really is ‘the loaf of your life’. Tomorrow morning I’ll be joining them all, with […]
