Eden, electric cars, and the circus.

by Freya Laughton on August 30, 2011

My friend Matthew Trevaskis of ecodrive teamed up with the Eden Project this month to show off some of the electric cars coming onto the market. With the incentive of test-driving the new Nissan Leaf, I filled up my old petrol-guzzling Fiat and drove up to Eden with my parents. While wandering between biomes and gazing down over the new vegetarian restaurant, we were reminded about the Labyrinth performances in the evenings. Little persuasion needed, we got tickets for that evening and went to have our electric test drive. The Leaf is now on my ‘to get’ list (after I’ve done the lots of money making, on my ‘to do’ list). I also had a sneaky little extra test drive of the new Smart electric, not so high on my list, but dinky.

Is there a part in all of us that dreams about running away to the circus?

I definitely fell under the spell of Nofit State circus this weekend. We were led through the Biomes and grounds of The Eden Project, while breathtaking acrobatics, up ropes and poles, in hoops and on bicycles were performed in all the corners of Eden, in time to wonderful live music written for the event. The journey led us to the main arena, where the cast walked on high wires, flew through the air on trapezes, spun on wires under water and sailed over fire. And they made it look so effortless and graceful, to lull you into a false sense that joining the circus could be easy.

I wanted more! If I wasn’t going to run away to my dream, I wanted to be under that spell once more before they left. So I went again last night, and loved it even more. I will be a fire dancer in my next life.
